This barn was replicated at the Somerset Historical Center from a barn built in the region about 1800.  Early southwestern Pennsylvania barns were usually constructed of logs.  Unlike the house, there is no chinking between the logs on the upper half providing a ventilated storage space.  Hay, and sometimes grain, was stored on the upper floor, while livestock was kept below.  From the direct-tax list of 1798 we have learned that Adam Miller, who owned one horse and one cow, had a barn of this size.
